Why Your Selfies Lie to You

If you've ever thought "I look better in person than in photos," you're probably right — and it's not in your head. It's optics.

The distortion is real and it's measurable

Phone front cameras use wide-angle lenses, typically in the 24–28mm equivalent range, held about 25–30cm from your face when you take a selfie. At that distance, wide lenses exaggerate perspective: whatever is closest to the lens gets rendered disproportionately large, and whatever is farther gets pushed back and shrunk.

Your nose is closer to the camera than your ears. Your forehead, tilted forward, is closer than your jaw. The result is a photograph that reliably enlarges the nose, widens the central face, and flattens the sense of depth that a longer lens would preserve — because the lens is doing exactly what wide-angle lenses do at close range, not because your face changed shape between the mirror and the photo.

Portrait photographers have known this for a century, which is why studio portraits are shot on 85–135mm lenses from several feet away — far enough that perspective distortion effectively disappears and features render close to their true relative proportions.

The gap between mirror-you and camera-you

There's a second effect stacking on top of the optics: mirrors show a flipped, familiar version of your face that your brain has spent years normalizing as "correct." Photos show the unflipped version — the one everyone else actually sees. Combine an unfamiliar orientation with wide-angle distortion at close range, and it's no surprise selfies feel like they're lying to you. In a narrow sense, they are.

What actually gives you an honest read

  • Distance over zoom. Step back and zoom in digitally rather than moving the lens closer — this approximates a longer focal length and reduces distortion, though it costs resolution on older phones.
  • Eye-level, not above or below. Shooting from above exaggerates forehead size and shrinks the jaw; shooting from below does the reverse. Neither is your actual proportions.
  • Diffused, even light. Harsh single-source light (including direct flash) exaggerates texture and shadow in ways that don't match how people perceive you under normal ambient light.
  • The rear camera, mirrored back for comparison. Rear cameras are usually a slightly longer focal length than the front camera on the same phone — a meaningfully more honest reference point.

Why this matters for scoring your face

Any face-scoring system that ingests a raw close-range selfie and treats every pixel as ground truth is measuring your phone's lens as much as your face. Distance, angle, and focal length shift the same face's measured proportions by a wide margin — which is why we ask for a specific capture distance and angle before running the analysis, instead of accepting whatever photo you happen to have. The measurement is only as honest as the photo it's measuring.

Your face probably isn't the problem. Your lens might be.
