
Chin exercise routines share the same basic promise: tighten your jaw and neck muscles in specific ways, repeatedly, and the fat underneath your chin will burn off. It's a satisfying idea — no diet change, no procedure, just repetition. It's also built on a premise exercise science has tested directly and repeatedly found false.
The premise is spot reduction, and spot reduction doesn't hold up
The idea that exercising a muscle burns the fat sitting on top of it is called spot reduction, and it's one of the more directly tested claims in exercise physiology. When you exercise, your body mobilizes and burns fat from stores across your whole body — it doesn't preferentially pull from whatever muscle you just worked.
The evidence for this isn't subtle. In one frequently cited study design, participants trained a single leg intensively for twelve weeks — around a thousand repetitions per session. Body scans afterward showed fat loss had happened across the whole body, not specifically over the trained leg. Tennis players make the same point without needing a lab: their dominant arm carries noticeably more muscle from years of asymmetric use, but studies comparing arm fat thickness between dominant and non-dominant sides find no meaningful difference. If spot reduction worked, competitive tennis players would be the clearest possible evidence of it, and they aren't.
Chin and neck exercises are asking the same mechanism to work on a smaller, more stubborn fat pad. It doesn't get a pass the rest of the body doesn't get.
What the exercises can actually do — and the honest limit of it
This isn't a complete "it does nothing" story. Chin and neck exercises do work the platysma and other muscles in that area, and toning those muscles can make the area look somewhat firmer. But reviews of the actual research on jawline and chin exercise routines find limited evidence they meaningfully reduce submental fat or tighten skin — the chewing and neck muscles these routines target don't have a direct mechanical relationship to the fat and skin sitting over them. You can genuinely strengthen the muscle. That's a different thing from removing what's covering it.
What's actually driving a double chin
Bone structure matters more than most people expect: a recessed chin or a lower-set hyoid bone leaves less physical room for neck and chin tissue to sit without folding, independent of body weight — which is part of why some genuinely slim people have a visible double chin and some heavier people don't. Inherited fat distribution patterns and skin laxity add to that, and skin laxity specifically gets worse with age as the skin and the muscles supporting the chin and neck weaken over time.
For the piece of this that is fat-driven, the lever that actually works is the same one that works everywhere else on the body: gradual overall fat loss, not targeted exercise. Slower, steady weight loss also gives skin more time to adapt to the new contour instead of being left loose, which matters more under the chin than almost anywhere else on the body.
What this actually means
If you're doing chin exercises because you enjoy them or want firmer-feeling muscle tone in that area, there's a real, if modest, mechanism behind that. If you're doing them expecting the fat itself to go away, the research doesn't support that outcome, the same way it doesn't support spot-reducing anywhere else. What's actually shaping the area is some combination of bone structure you were born with, fat distribution, and — if that's the relevant piece for you — overall body composition, not how many reps you did today.
