High Cheekbones: What's Actually Genetic

"High cheekbones" gets compared, debated, and searched constantly — do I have them, are they attractive, how do I know which one I am. Almost none of that conversation draws the one distinction that actually matters: how prominent your cheekbones look and where your cheekbone bone actually sits are two different things, and only one of them is fixed.

What's actually fixed

The position and projection of your zygomatic bone — the cheekbone itself — is set by genetics, and it's polygenic: no single gene decides it, several do, working together with your broader bone structure. That position locks in once facial bone growth finishes, typically by your early-to-mid twenties. No amount of facial exercise, diet, or skincare moves the bone itself afterward. If someone tells you otherwise, they're selling something.

What's actually variable — and this is the part that gets skipped

Here's the distinction almost every quick explainer misses: how visible your cheekbones look has at least as much to do with the fat sitting over them as it does with the bone underneath. Two people can have nearly identical zygomatic bone structure and look completely different in cheekbone definition, purely based on facial adiposity — how much fat sits in the cheeks and under-eye area, covering or revealing the same underlying shape.

This cuts both directions. Someone with genuinely modest cheekbone projection can look sharply defined at a lower body fat percentage. It also explains why the same person's cheekbones can look completely different at different points in their life — weight change, aging-related fat and volume shifts, even water retention on a given day — none of which touched the bone at all.

Photography and makeup work the same lever from a different angle. Contouring doesn't change anything physical; it uses shadow to visually suggest a more defined cheekbone than the fat and bone underneath actually produce. Camera angle and lighting do the same thing for free, which is a large part of why the same face photographs as dramatically different in cheekbone prominence from one photo to the next.

Does it actually matter for attractiveness?

There's a real, documented association between more prominent cheekbones and higher attractiveness ratings in facial-perception research. It's also modest and context-dependent — it shows up as a tendency across large samples, not a rule that predicts any individual face, and it interacts with everything else going on in that face rather than operating as its own independent score. Treat "high cheekbones" as one input among many, not a verdict.

What this actually means for you

If you're trying to work out whether your cheekbones are "high" or "low," you're often really asking a question about facial fat and lighting, not skeletal structure — and that's actually useful information, because it means the visible part is more responsive to things like body composition and photo conditions than most quick explainers admit. The bone itself isn't something you're changing either way.
